The summer vacation is over and seems but a dream, reality hits home and the first week back at college is nearly over and the third year is already in flow.
Monday was the first day back and it was nice to see the old faces, coffee and natter is the norm and for those we have not seen over the summer its a good old catch up. The swapping of tales, visits, holidays and traumas fill the studios, laughing and gaiety commences whilst we don the studios with their first of two annual showers of brilliant white matt emulsion. (more on the floors and ourselves than the walls, but we are artists after all). My new studio space is bigger than last years and has a few more walls and more space to work. My ideas have been flowing over the summer months and along with drawings and diagrams my sketchbook has taken life.
Tuesday I started on a piece of conceptual work that again involves letters, a continuation of work from last year. The piece that I am working on involves the preconception and the perception of the viewer tagged along with my concepts of childhood and their meanings for me. the ambiguity is there but all will become evident. I have already come across a few hurdles during the first day of creativity but nothing a good strong coffee and a biscuit cannot fix (also a good heavy hammer). It is all trial and error when hands on in studio, the sketchbook has the drawings and the fundamentals, now the hands are playing catch up. As artists we have ideas and sketch these, we have visions and try to recreate these but as anyone will tell you one of the main functions as an artist is to problem solve. The problems usually come along with the technical endeavours of building, electrical and situational elements of the project which we sometimes dismiss as the norm, this is what makes up our creative day as artistic people.
Wednesday I managed to get in the 3d room and get some pieces together for my first project. Once the basics are in place I will then start to post pics of the ideas and my progress on the piece.
Today is Thursday and I have been working from home trying to get some paperwork sorted, reopening my blog and updating my C.V. Also later today I will be attending a meeting in the HE University Centre at GIFHE for more information regarding a role as a student quality control reviewer. I will pop along and see what this involves and also determine whether this will take too much of my time up during my crucial 3rd year.
Friday will be creativity day all day which i will be pleased with, I like to work quick but also learned from last year it is good to take a step back and ensure the work is taking shape as it should and not just for production sakes.
