Busy busy week at college. what with 1-1's and crits. Compiled some sound pieces for the Lightworks festival and to go with the sculpture... all my studio painted out again and some stuff cleared out to tidy the space for crits.
The crits were Friday morning and we had a few more in the crit group than expected but it was an interesting mix of painters, printers, contextual and conceptual artists. I was nervous as usual but i was happy with what I had set up. I used the tear sculptures as pendants hanging on invisible thread with a light source above and below, I also used a large plynth on its side hiding the light source from the ground. the plynth also had 2 of the sculptures upon it and one of these housed the sound piece that I had playing. The installation had mixed reactions and some good comments for both the sculptures and the sound which left me content with the piece. After the crit I cut the sculptures down ready to be exhibited in the Lightworks festival at the Grimsby Minster.
At 1pm we all went down to the Minster to set up the work for lightworks and help with the set up of other work that was being exhibited. There was some great pieces of film and sound this year and the light work was brillaint as usual. The commission winners Shahar Marcus (Video) Michael Day (animation) & Magz Hall (sound) were all great and well deserved winners, but some lovely open submission work too and some brill stuff from the students. this year we also had the added bonus of the BA performance art gang who were great too.
I have been promoting the lightworks event for a few months now on twitter and facebook pages and on the day I was live tweeting from the event whilst setting up and on the night too.
Here are a few images of the event set up and the festival.
lightworks is a great opportunity for artists local, national and international to get involved and also gives students the insight into the work that goes into setting up an exhibition of this scale. It is a long day and managed to get home about 11.20pm but it was well worth it and met some great people.
I'm off to Sheffield tomorrow to see the family so I'm trying to catch up with some writing and social networking today, so it's ta ta for now..!
